As a sculptor, I am honored to have created these life-size busts of Apollo astronauts Neil Armstrong ans Eugene Cernan, two of the most iconic figures in the history of human space exploration.
This commission required extensive research into NASA archives, historical photographs, and mission-era spacesuit details to faithfully capture the likeness, character, and accomplishments of these remarkable men. Each sculpture began as a hand-sculpted clay model, carefully developed to convey not only physical accuracy but also the determination, courage, and pioneering spirit that defined the Apollo era.
Every Stage of the process-- from concept develpment and sculpting to mold making, casting, and finishig-- was executed with close attention to detail and commitment to craftmanship. The goal was to create enduring works of art that honor the astronauts' achievements while inspiring future gerenerations of explorers, engineers, scientists, and dreamers.
Niel Armstrong, the first human to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission, and Eugene Cernan, commander of Apollo 17 and the last person to leave the lunar surface, represent milestones in mankind's greatest journey of discovery. It is a privilege to contribute to preserving their legacy through sculpture.
Today, these commissioned busts are proudly displayed at Purdue University, where they stand as a tribute to the Apollo program, the spirit of exploration, and the extraordinary individuals who expanded the bounderies of human achievements.
